When the iPhone made its debut on June 29, 2007 the world went crazy. People lined up for blocks, camped out on sidewalks for days just to be the first to get their hands on the phone that would change their lives forever. However in 2009 iPhone 3G (3g Phone) was released and the mayhem started over. The iPhone seemingly had cornered the Smartphone market in spite of its hefty price tag of $600. Of course the price dropped significantly and those who waited could purchase the iPhone for under a $100.

But ... lurking in the shadows was a phone which would give the iPhone a run for its money. It was similar in style to the iPhone and could be customized to suit the user’s needs—the Droid. T-mobile launched the Google phone or the G1 was officially in the hands of gadget lovers on October, 2008. The G1 was the first to use the Google Android software and cost a mere $179 with a 2 year contract. allowed customers to pre-order the phone to ensure customers had the phone in hand on the official release date.

Comparing Apples and Androids

When Size Matters: The G1 measures 4.60 x 2.16 x 0.62 while the iPhone measures 5.5 x 2.4 x 0.48. The G1 is slight smaller than but slightly thicker than the iPhone.

Screen size on the G1 is 3.2 inches compared to the 3.5 inch screen on the iPhone.

It's in the Touch: Both phones have touch screen. The G1 has a QWERTY keyboard, trackball and navigation keys. The iPhone has a ‘Home’ button and multi-touch gesture support. The G1 does not have multi-touch gesture support.

The Big Picture: The G1 offers a 3.2 megapixels camera while the iPhone boasts a 2.0 megapixels camera. Neither phone offer video recording.

Get Connected: Quad-band GSM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth headset is offered by both and neither offers stereo Bluetooth. The G1 offers dual-band UMTS and the iPhone offers tri-band UMTS/HSDPA.

Make It Yours: There are so many applications available to make the G1 reflect who you are and most of the applications are free. This means you can use third-party applications on your G1 either using your storage card via computer or Wi-Fi.

The iPhone has an abundance of applications as well, but you can only download them from iTunes, Amazon and Apps store.

Battle of the Best

IPhone sold approximately one million phones the first week and that was in spite of the $500 price tag. As far as the other carriers, this would be a pretty hard number to beat. When T-mobile announced the G1 was available for preorder, the G1 pre-sold over 1.5 million phones and another 500k once the G1 was released. If Apple plans to stay in the running, they should keep a close eye on the G1; otherwise they might find themselves at the bottom of the pile.

Note: Today’s techie wants flexibility and freedom which is what the G1 provides, while Apple still remains pretty much proprietary if they want to play in the major league perhaps they might want to allow more flexibility when it comes to third-party apps.
