If you see someone who is wishing to do a reset on their home router there might be a lot of reasons for them to do it. The most common things are forgetting the admin password, forgetting the Wi-Fi security key and also troubleshooting problems with connection.

There are a few various ways to reset routers.

Hard Resets

This is the most drastic way to reset your routers because it totally wipes your router of every possible setting. It is most often done when you have forgot your password.

You will do this reset by taking a pencil or pen and while your router is one fond the reset button on it's behind and then press it for about 30 seconds. It will usually take a minute to start again after you reset it. If this way doesn't work hold it down for 90 seconds and then unplug the router and plug it in again. You don't have to wait 30 seconds to plug it in back again, just a few seconds will do. But, it will again take some time for your router to start up again.

Soft Resetting

If you are seeking to reset your network connection after you have encountered some problems, this is the way to do it. Unplug the cable that is used to connect your modem and router and then plug it in again. There is a button which can do this in some routers.

There are also routers that have an option which is called Restore Factory Defaults. It will bring back the generic settings the router had when it first got into your hands.

There is also something called Reset Security Button which only resets wireless settings to generic and not touching anything else. The things that are changes are SSID, encryption and channel number.

This type of reset will immediately happen without you having to wait a minute, unlike other methods.
