A 60 GHz protocol is a network protocol that runs in a range that is close to 60 GHz, obviously. But, this is quite flexible as the range can go up to 64 and down to 57. If you compare other protocols like Wi-Fi or any other wireless protocol you will see that they are significantly lower (Wi-Fi is somewhere around 2-5 GHz). This major difference is what contributes to the problems and advantages in 60 GHz protocols.

The advantages and disadvantages of 60 GHz Protocols

The main goal of using such high frequencies is the huge bandwidth and data rates which it allows. High quality videos are one of the big advantages of this protocol but they are not the only one. Yet another difference between Wi-Fi and this protocol is that Wi-FI can support up to 300 Mbps and 60 GHz can support over 1000 Mbps.

But, it is not all sunshine and rainbows. 60 GHz brings some problems. Although it has much greater speed than other protocols, it has a lower effective range. The range is somewhere around 10 meters or 30 feet in open space, but it can't penetrate walls or anything else as a matter of fact so it can only be used in a single room or an open space. Yet another advantage is that the devices that use this protocol don't need to be licensed by the government so it results in lower cost and other benefits for the people who buy these kinds of devices. We should state that the devices that use this protocol use more power than other ones.

WirelessHD

We mentioned high quality video streaming above. There is a specific standard of 60 GHz that is made for this. It can now support up to an incredible 28 Gbps. It is called WirelessHD, and the brand behind it is UltraGig. It is made by Silicon Image.

WiGig

This standard is sometimes referred to as IEEE 802.11ad. It was made in 2010 and it can have data rates that go to 7 Gbps. This standard is used as a substitution to cables in video monitors and other devices next to high definition video streaming. There is something called Wireless Gigabit Alliance which monitors and manages the development of this kind of technology.

The WiGig and WirelessHD technologies are somewhat rivals. There is a wide notion that in the future we may see WiGig more often than Wi-Fi, but it is a longshot.
