This time we had the chance to try out a product from the Chinese firm D-Link, a renowned manufacturer of computer networking equipment. It is a product that is called Cloud Router and is classified by the marking DIR-605L. Next to being built by the 802.11n specification and being declared at speeds of 300 Mbit/s on a working frequency of 2,4 GHz, through the My D-Link service ( or the application (Android or iOS) it gives access to information in a network that works wherever the user is located.

In the package, next to the router, you get a voltage adapter (5V DC, 1A), LAN cable, CD with instructions and software, as well as printed documentation. It is built out of shining plastic and it has a modern design, with round and sharp edges on strategic places. On the upper part are seven green signal LED lights (voltage, WAN/Internet, WiFi and four LAN), on the front and both lateral sides are cooling grids, on one side you can find the “WPS” button, and on the back side the connections (four connections 10/100 Mbit/s LAN port, one 10/100 Mbit/s WAN port, two antennas, a power connector and a reset button).
Unlike the models so far, in this one there is no software wizard for setting the basic options, but instead they are automatically set with the first WiFi connecting on an AP device. For the later setting of the options you can access it through the Web interface.
D-Link DIR605L Cloud RouterFrom the standard options it is important to mention that it has Time Scheduling, WiFi Protected Setup (PIN or PBC), two active firewalls, from which one is Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and the other is Network Address Translation (NAT), WP2 passcode protection with Advanced Encryption standard (AES), Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and Dynamic DNS (DDNS).
The advanced options that we would mention as interesting are Traffic Control, System Check and the so called Cloud Access, that you don’t see very often in SOHO networking devices. In the Traffic Control settings the first thing that is defined is the total Internet link bandwidth, so based on that the router can be set to automatically distribute strain or you can define the fix value for 5 different IP addresses. That is good for home or office use, where the only lack at fixed defining is that one volume is use for either incoming or outgoing traffic, so you can only define two volumes of IP addresses. The option System Check is seen in various types in devices meant for application in industries and it is used to show the condition of LAN, with a built in ping console for checking the recall of the device in the network.
The Cloud Access itself is nothing new, but actually a unification of several services that were already available, but in that way it makes using them easier to the average user. Through this service you can see which sites are accessed in the network that is serviced by the router, who and when he tried to connect to that network, and you can also turn on e-mail notifications.

We did the standard test for this device – range and bandwidth. On the range test the router behaved well. It covered a one single story house with no blind spots. We would mention that the coverage depends on the construction of the walls, so the results can differ from ours. It didn\'t do that well on the bandwidth test. During sending information speeds of 1,6 MB/s were achieved, and in downloading 1,8 MB/s. Although the performances are not awesome, the options such Traffic Control are the best recommendation for this device.
