Apple's new iPhone 5 is the latest in a line of innovative and impressive smartphones. But what sets this new iteration apart from its predecessors? Let's check out some of the iPhone 5's killer features.
LTE on the AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Networks
If LTE service is available near you, this is an awesome feature. The speed is just incomparable. With LTE, you feel like your browsing the Internet on high-speed WiFi when you're actually on mobile Internet - no speed penalty.
At first thought, this doesn't seem like that big of a deal. But think about it this way: you're most likely to have your iPhone, not your DSLR, on you when you see something worth sharing. Now, instead of trying to zoom out enough to catch a whole scene, you can take several photos and stitch them together automatically, without suffering a loss in resolution.
The iPhone 5's battery life is really remarkable. The previously impressive battery life of the 4S is now greatly exceeded by the iPhone 5. This new iPhone provides over 8 hours of 3G or LTE browsing, 8 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of WiFi browsing, and up to an incredible and reassuring 225 hours of standby time from a full charge.
Lightning Dock Connector
Every iDevice since the original iPod has used the same connector, which could only be plugged into the device in one direction, usually not the one you tried first. Apple's new "Lightning" connector means you'll need an adapter for your old peripherals, but it also means you'll no longer be fumbling in the dark trying to figure out which way the plug goes. The Lightning connector is 80 percent smaller than its predecessor, allowing the headphone jack to be moved to the bottom of the iPhone 5.
Apple's new virtual wallet app, called "Passbook", allows you to keep your store loyalty cards, movie and event tickets, boarding passes and even your Starbucks card in one virtual location. Many apps are now compatible with the app, such as Fandango for movie tickets, EventBrite for even tickets, American Airlines for boarding passes, even Target coupons. This step forward for simplifying and streamlining your life can really help reduce all the clutter you carry around with you on a daily basis.
The iPhone 5 will ship with newly redesigned earbuds called "EarPods" that are designed to fit more snugly in your ear and remain there more stably - no more constantly readjusting them as you go about your morning jog. The new EarPods also include larger controls on the wire, making them easier to use without looking, and more capacity to be sure of what you're doing.
The new iPhone 5 screen is now a four-inch diagonal, allowing for an additional row of apps on the home screen, in addition to providing a 16:9 ratio for watching HD video, eliminating the "letterboxing" effecting previously seen on earlier iPhones. In addition, Apple's bumped up color saturation 44 percent, proving truer and brighter colors without sacrificing depth of color.
