It is very strange that I've never shared my passion of creating batch files with our viewers before today. So here goes nothing: Batch files are set of instruction that allows Windows OS users to do tons of things very quickly and efficiently. When people here the words "set of instructions" when it comes to computers, they right away think "Programming". Well batch files in my opinion are small sets of programming codes and no less. But the best part is that you don't have to be a programmer to learn to create batch files. Yes! It's true!
Most people, like me who are known to be computer savvy in fact do not know any programming language at all. And if you are part of this group - be proud yet still for being a programmer isn't a criteria for working efficiently at your computer at all. However, knowing DOS commands is a big factor when it comes to creating batch files.
But for a newbie to batch making the most logical question is: Why the heck should I learn to create batch in the first place? Well, as explained before, batch scripting can become a good part of your PC knowledge arsenal. You can do many things with Batch Scripting such as: managing and/or deleting files etc. For a novice, batch files can be thought of as a desktop shortcut for long DOS commands.
For example, I use batch files to quickly and easily delete my Internet Cache, Internet History, Internet Cookies, and some other temp files by a click of a mouse without having to go through other means and I get the job done more properly.
DOS commands differ from one version of DOS to the other. For example: DOS commands like "deltree" is usable in Windows 98's version of DOS but not in Windows XP's version of DOS. There are other such commands as well, just incase you rest assured.
So when creating a batch file, one might need to make sure that the batch file would work on the intended machine. As such, a very famous batch file is known to all Windows users named Autoexec.bat which is simply a boot file loaded each time the computer is loaded. Autoexec.bat file holds various commands to load a mixture of programs and drivers into memory each time the computer start.
In retrospect to what we have just learned, Batch Scripting is Good. Working Hard is Bad! Working Smart is Good! This article was just to introduce batch file making concept to you all. Keep an eye out for Batch Scripting Tutorials and Scripts soon to come.
