Defragmenting your hard drive is very important for a fast and secure computer. If you notice your computer working slowly, defragmenting is the first thing you should do. You need to know how to do this process safely and with that delay the buying of a new computer. In the following article you will learn why the defragmenting of a disc is very important and how it is done.

How to Defragment Your Hard Drive

The average computer user sees a file as a a song, picture or a Word document, but the operating system sees that file as bits that are all over the hard drive. In order for the computer to open that file that we started with a double click, it has to gather little bits and combine them into one file that will be shown on our monitor. When you constantly uninstall and install programs, free spaces are filled and emptied on the hard drive, because that is a rational way to use the space in it, but after a while there are to many scattered bits and the computer has a hard time to put them together.

By defragmenting a disk we will allow the computer to rearrange the information (bits) on the hard drive so it will open them faster later. In a computer language it can be said that the defragmenting of a disk is the process of unifying fragmented files on the hard drive.

The clearest way it will if we explain it in this way: You want to do your math homework. You have one school and home book and one school and home notebook. If all those thing are scattered in different drawers it will take more time to find them, but if you “defragment” them, and put all your school stuff in one drawer, it will be easier to get them and  do your homework.

Hard Drive Analysis

The procedure of defragmenting a disk is very similar for the last few versions of Windows. The first thingDefragment hard drive and improve performance you need to do is the hard drive analysis, to determine if the defragmentation is even needed:
  1. First click Start, go to All Programs, go to Accessories, go to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
  2. Click on the hard drive that you want to analyze.
  3. Click on Analyze to start the hard drive analysis.
  4. Look over the analysis results when it is finished and estimate if defragmentation is needed.

Defragmenting Your Hard Drive:

  1. Click on the hard drive you want to defragment.
  2. Click on defragment to start the process.
  3. Watch as it progresses. This will take a long time if your hard drive is full.

Advice

  • To make this process faster, before starting it delete all unnecessary files and put the files and folder where the will usually stay. Also, you can make a system backup file before defragmentation.

Warning

  • Don’t defragment to often because that can shorten the life of your hard drive. Also, it is important to mention that during defragmentation you can damage files, although it is rare.
