Networking In General

Coaxial Cables

This term was used for the first time more than 200 years ago. The coax cable was created in the 1880s, and the most common purpose was connecting TV's and antennas. But, today there is a different usage. They provide 10 Mbps Ethernet connections. The time when this kind of connection was most used was in the 80s, but now we are talking about the 20th century. Usually there were 2 types of cables used - the thinnet and the thicknet. They are called thin and thick because their thickness varied depending on their wiring inside the insulation. They were really stiff and this often caused problems.

Twisted Pair Cables

This type of cabling was most popular in the 90s and it was the most used connection for Ethernet. First it was 10 Mbps and then later it was upgraded to 100 Mbps, and at the final stage of development it achieved speeds of up to 10 Gbps. They can have any number of wires ranging from 1 to 8. There are 2 basic types called UTP and STP. UTP is more commonly used due to it's lower cost but STP can be found in FDDI network.Networking cables

Fiber Optics

In this type of cabling glass is used instead of metal wiring. They are made of glass, but don't let that fool you into thinking that they are not flexible, because they are. They are usually used in wide are networks. They commonly go through the ground. There are 2 basic types called the single mode and the multimode. Because single mode has a higher bandwidth it is used over bigger distances, and because multimode costs less you will often find it in LAN networks.

USB Cables

The most common use of USB cables are connecting some device with your computer whether it is a speaker or a mouse. But, there are adapters that will enable you to connect your Ethernet cable to your USB port, although in an indirect fashion. They contain twisted pair wires.

Serial and Parallel Cables

When networking two computer together in the last two decades of the previous century there were a lot of problems because Ethernet was not common and there were no USB cables so this type of networking had to be used. They used to connect two computers and transfer information at the speed of 0.115 or 0.45 Mbps.

Crossover Cables

These cables are used to connect 2 networking devices that are the same type. It doesn't matter what it is, it just has to be a networking device and it needs to be the exact same type. The usual place to find them is on old home computers and home networks a few years ago. They look almost exactly the same as normal cables, but they just have coloring on their wires on the end.
