Introduction:

IT Certification can do great things for your career. Technical certification programs also provide IT professionals with more confidence, greater responsibilities and higher salaries. In the Certification Magazine 2002 Salary Survey, reported in the December 2001 CertMag, results showed the average certificant earns $55,577 annually. What's more, 37 percent of respondents received a promotion within a year of attaining their primary certification, and 53 percent received an average 19.3 percent salary increase in that same first year.

According to the survey, the average certification costs $1,934 to achieve. In nearly half the cases, 49 percent, companies paid the entire certification bill, while 34 percent paid their own way and 17 percent shared the cost with their employers.

The most commonly used materials for these IT professionals include self-study books (77 percent), practice exams (68 percent), instructor-led training (57 percent), on-the-job training (48 percent) and product documentation (33 percent).

The 2002 CertMag Salary Survey provided a strong picture of the certification industry. Programs pay off well for professionals, who in turn appreciate the quality of the educational material provided and the opportunities certification offers.

The demand for professionals in information technology (IT) is high and the competition for jobs are intense. Individuals, experienced or new to the profession, need to know what skills make them attractive to employers. Employers look for ways to distinguish employees and prospective employees who have the solid foundation of skills needed for effective performance

Skilled technical personnel remain in short supply for small and mid size solution providers, and managers responding to this year's CRN Salary Survey have seen little easing of that trend in the past 12 months.

Under these conditions, technicians with advanced certifications in networking and Internet-related areas are commanding higher salaries and larger pay increases than their less-skilled counterparts.

The collapse of the dot-com sector last year hasn't increased the supply of personnel to any great extent for smaller solution providers. Only 10 percent of the 674 technicians CRN surveyed said they have worked for a dot-com in the past. This held true in eight of the 10 certification categories CRN surveyed; "Red Hat certified engineer" and "Sun certification for Java" were exceptions.

Generally, large solution providers can pay more for technicians and offer more attractive non-monetary perks than small and mid size players, which sometimes makes it difficult for the latter to attract talent.

The importance of technicians having certification is a hot topic of debate in the solution provider community. Being certified weighs heavily in monetary compensation when it comes to specialized networking and Internet-related skills that are in particularly high demand by solution providers.

For example, the median level of compensation for a Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE) was $112,000 last year, 75 percent higher than the $64,000 earned by a non-certified technician.

And for technicians with Sun certification for Java, the median compensation was $87,500, which was 37 percent, or $23,500, more than that of non certified personnel.

Technicians with advanced certifications are often at the head of the line for increase in pay, according to survey data. This is not surprising, given the growing complexity of technology systems and the limited supply of technicians holding these certifications.

And for some certifications, such as MCSE and Red Hat Certified Engineer, median compensation levels in the East are actually slightly higher than in the West. The same holds true in some of the managerial and sales personnel categories.

Finally, the data revealed that technicians working for e-business integrators command significantly higher compensation levels than those working for solution providers with less of an emphasis on e-business.

People with hands-on experience in the data-security areas of backup and recovery, as the events of Sept. 11 prompted many companies to take a closer look at how their IT infrastructures would hold up in the event of a large-scale disaster.

Other IT skills that will be in demand this year include enterprise application integration, database administration, IT project management, network administration, and business and systems analysis, say IT and business executives, recruiters, and analysts. There's a common thread to all of these requirements: Companies need people who can move beyond general technical expertise and contribute to the strategy and development of IT systems that achieve business goals

Now I will tell in detail about different popular certifications today and the reader will be able to select one according to his/her Interest.

CompTIA Certification:

CompTIA certification programs are the recognized industry standards for foundation-level skills and are known throughout the technology community as one of the best ways to break into the information technology field and build a solid career. Many companies preferentially hire people with certifications.

A+ Certification is a CompTIA-sponsored testing program that certifies the competency of entry-level (6 months experience) computer service technicians. The A+® exams contain situational and identification types of questions. All of the questions are multiple choice. There is either one answer for each question, or the question identifies how many answers you should select. The test covers a broad range of hardware and software technologies, but is not bound to any vendor-specific products.

Major computer hardware and software vendors, distributors, resellers and publications, back the program. A+ certification signifies that the certified individual possesses the knowledge and skills essential for a successful entry-level (6 months experience) computer service technician, as defined by experts from companies across the industry.

The A+ test is available throughout the world in a variety of languages (Spanish, French, German, and Japanese,). To date, over 500,000 people have obtained the A+ Certification.

The courses available through Red Hat training range from rapid track to essential knowledge and skills, to practical methods for developing Linux-based applications.

Red Hat also offers courses that focus on specific areas of expertise, such as e-business, security and embedded technologies.

They are designed to create a basis for further development and real-world practice. Good training can provide a foundation; the participant must do the rest. As an alternative to classroom-based training, Red Hat offers an extensive set of online courses.

Audience focus is the IT professional: system administrator, network administrator, or developer. Our technical focus is on the skills and competencies required to manage Linux servers for mission-critical commercial and business roles, including: internet server, web server, MTA server, ISP, DNS server, file and print server, departmental server, and development platform.

The RHCE Program offers two curriculum tracks: Rapid and Standard. The RH300 RHCE Rapid Track course is aimed at those who already possess significant systems administration experience and knowledge in a UNIX or Linux environment, and who desire to become certified at the level indicated above. Good candidates for RHCE consist of individuals who fit the following profiles:

  • Experienced UNIX systems administrators and UNIX system engineers
  • Experienced UNIX or Linux network engineers, NOC and ISP technical staffers
  • Experienced Linux systems administrators and engineers
  • Other UNIX and/or Linux power-users that may want focused training and certification on Red Hat Linux

The Standard Track consists of 3 courses RH033, RH133, RH253.

RH033:

RH033 is designed for beginners, and covers all skills to become a productive user, including installation and command line essentials.

RH133:

RH133 is designed for those wanting to prepare for professional responsibilities as a Linux systems administrator. You'll learn all the skills required to manage a Linux workstation and attach to a corporate network, including configuration of client-side network services. Prerequisites include networking fundamentals and internetworking with TCP/IP, widely available from reputable training vendors or through self-study.

RH253:

RH253 is designed for those who desire to build skills at configuring and administering a Red Hat Linux server running key enterprise network services and security. Prerequisites include RH133 or equivalent skills.

RHCE certifications on 5.2, 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3 are all considered current by Red Hat, Inc. Red Hat has no plans to de-list RHCEs. Re-certification is a matter of choice by professionals and their employers. Red Hat provides complete verification of RHCE certification, including version numbers, at Certification Central, so that individuals, their employers and customers can make their own informed decisions based on what version they are actually running and how critical re-certification is for their own requirements. Our information suggests that the RHCE is such a strong certification that RHCEs in continuous practice as professionals are likely to be able to keep their skill levels up in pace with Linux technology. Some Red Hat partner programs mandate RHCEs certified on the most recent major release.

The RHCE Certificate:

The RHCE certificate is designed to fit in a specific place within the computer industry spectrum of UNIX/Linux user levels.

The primary goal of RHCE certification is to meet the demand of individuals and employers for a useful metric of individual skills and knowledge, particularly with Red Hat Linux, the largest-selling distribution of Linux.

RHCE Certification is required of Red Hat Certified Channel Partners, ISVs, OEMs, Service Providers, and other partners. RHCE is a meaningful assurance of quality standards when Red Hat channel partners pre-install Red Hat Linux or deliver Red Hat Linux-related Consulting services, software, and solutions.

RHCE certification indicates that the person has passed a realistic performance-based lab exam that tests his/her ability to: install and configure Red Hat Linux; understand limitations of hardware; configure basic networking and file systems; configure the X Window System; configure basic security, set up common network (IP) services, carry out basic diagnostics and troubleshooting, and perform essential Red Hat Linux system administration.

The readiness objective of RHCE is to assure a minimum level of systems administration skills so that a person is "ready from a technical point of view for professional responsibilities in managing a Red Hat Linux system for common uses."

The RHCE Certificate is granted upon passing the RHCE Exam, a performance-based test on live equipment, that measures actual competencies at server system administration, setup of network services, and basic server security. The RHCE Exam can be taken alone as RH302 RHCE Exam only or as the final day of the RH300 RHCE course. The course consists of 4 days of intensive training, emphasizing hands-on lab workshops with realistic configuration and administration tasks using Red Hat Linux, plus the Certification Lab Exam on day 5.

CIW certification validates competency in IT industry standards, concepts and best practices; and familiarity with leading hardware and software technology.

An IT certification for the knowledge economy, CIW is an Internet vendor-neutral or job-role curriculum and certification designed to help career changers enter the IT industry and experienced and vendor-certified professionals build on existing IT skills.

CIW is the largest Internet job-role certification. It is increasingly recognized and accepted as the standard vendor-neutral certification by corporations, academic organizations, commercial training centers and industry publications. No other Internet job-role certification can claim the same size, credibility and acknowledgement as CIW. More than 30,000 CIW certifications have been earned. More than 1,000 CIW Authorized Training Providers offer the training and certification in more than 64 countries.

CIW is offered for three disciplines - Designer, Enterprise Developer and Administrator - and one cross-functional area - Web Site Manager, which combines the other three disciplines, to allow learners to focus on pursuing personal interests and talents.

CIW Certifications and Paths:

The first step toward CIW certification is the CIW Foundations series. After successful completion of the Foundations exam, candidates are awarded a CIW Associate certification. After achieving CIW Associate status, candidates can choose from four Master CIW certification tracks. Candidates who pass the CIW Foundations can earn the CIW Professional designation upon passing any CIW job role series exam. CIW Professionals may earn Master CIW Administrator, Master CIW Designer, Master CIW Enterprise Developer, or Master CIW Web Site Manager designation after completing all the series in a track

CIW Prerequisites:

CIW Foundations is a prerequisite for all CIW series. To become a CIW Associate, candidates must pass the CIW Foundations exam (1D0-410) administered by Prometric and VUE. CIW accepts score reports from candidates who have passed the CompTIA i-Net+ exam and will award Foundations exam credit to these individuals.

CIW Associate:

After passing the Foundations exam, candidates are awarded the CIW Associate designation. To become a CIW Associate, candidates must pass the CIW Foundations exam (1D0-410) administered by Prometric and VUE. CIW accepts score reports from candidates who have passed the CompTIA i-Net+ exam and will award a CIW Associate designation to these individuals.

CIW Professional:

CIW is built around job-roles that give you CIW Professional level certifications. CIW Professional level certifications are best suited for individuals who are now performing jobs related to the Internet or who are pursuing careers within mid-level technical positions.

With the exception of Web Languages, Java Programming, and Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (all three are programming languages found in the Master CIW Enterprise Developer track), all courses within each of the Master CIW tracks are job role series. Candidates who have passed the CIW Foundations exam plus any one of the eight CIW job roles series exams within any of the Master CIW tracks is awarded a CIW Professional certification.

Master CIW Certification:

To become Master CIW certified, it is recommended that candidates take each training series in sequence. For example, to achieve a Master CIW Administrator certification, it is recommended that candidates get trained in CIW Server Administrator curriculum, then CIW Internetworking Professional curriculum, and then CIW Security Professional curriculum. It is also recommended, but not required, that candidates pass each CIW series exam before sitting the next CIW series training. This strategy allows them to focus on the technology for each CIW series before adding more complex technologies into the mix. Having passed all of the series exams in a Master CIW track, candidates will receive their Master CIW certificate.

Master CIW Administrator:

Composed of three five-day series, each series representing an Internet job role with its own exam (Server Administrator, Internetworking Professional, and Security Professional series).

Master CIW Enterprise Developer:

Our most comprehensive program, composed of three Internet job roles (Application Developer, Database Specialist, and Enterprise Developer series) and four additional language exams (JavaScript, Perl, Java Programming, and Object-Oriented Analysis).

CIW Specialization certificate:

The CIW Specialization certificate recognizes the achievements of qualifying certified individuals as having achieved a level of competency in specific areas of Internet specialization.

To qualify for the CIW Security Analyst Specialization certificate, individuals must have attained one of the following levels of certification and submit proof of these certifications to the CIW program: MCSE 4, MCSE 2000, CNE 4, CNE 5, CCNP, CCIE, LPI Level 2, or SAIR Level 2 LCE. You must pass the Security Professional Exam (1D0-470) and submit proof of certification in one of the areas above to Certification Central.

Now that you've gotten free know-how on this topic, try to grow your skills even faster with online video training. Then finally, put these skills to the test and make a name for yourself by offering these skills to others by becoming a freelancer. There are literally 2000+ new projects that are posted every single freakin' day, no lie!
