Networking In General

1. Talk to your service provider

First, contact your service provider and make sure they do their job properly and provide the service they should. Or maybe your package is obsolete and the company will upgrade it either for free or for a small fee. Keep in mind, however, that very few people get the maximum speed, because of the distance, congestion, and traffic shaping.

2. Find a web browser that works for you

Most people still use Internet Explorer, though there are faster browsers. If you are an active Internet user check Firefox and Opera to see which is best for your type of connection and hardware configuration. For example, Chrome is particularly good for computers that are low on RAM, as it is not memory hungry as Firefox and IE.

3. Prevent unauthorized accessnetwork speed

If you are using a wireless internet connection, make sure that is not shared with the entire neighborhood. The more people use your connection the slower it is for you. So, at the very least set up a WEP password to stop unauthorized users from using your Internet connection. Or, if your hardware is compatible, set VPA encryption.

4. Control the use of bandwidth

There are many applications that will use your bandwidth in the background, such as Windows Update, Windows Live Messenger, Skype, Real Player, Adobe Reader, corrections, and other similar software. Most of them usually start automatically when you start Windows and connect to the Internet when there is a connection. This means that these applications use bandwidth when you do not really need it. If you are not sure which programs are secretly using your bandwidth, you can use a free tool called Auslogics Task Manager. With this program you can keep track of which applications and processes are consuming your network traffic.

If your Internet connection speed dropped suddenly for no apparent reason, check your computer for malware and spyware. Malicious software often uses your Internet connection to send information to its developers.

5. Perform some basic PC maintenance

If your computer is slow, it does not matter how fast your Internet connection is - everything will be slow because your computer can not cope. The answer to this is to keep your computer in good condition and regularly maintained as , and defragment your registry, repair, and do other tasks such as monitoring your startup items and optimizing Windows services. This not only speeds up your PC's performance it also speeds up Internet connection.
